The provision of CCTV in Rayleigh has a chequered history, initially the responsibility of Rochford District Council which was subsequently passed onto Rayleigh Town Council. It appears it has now gone full circle after Rayleigh Town Council decommissioned the cameras after deciding investment in a replacement system and GDPR was becoming a 'bit of a headache'.

Next Monday, Rayleigh Town Council members will need to decide if they will agree in principle to part-finance the installation of 5 town centre cameras in a solution put forward by Rochford District Council. This comes with what could be seen as a hefty price tag of just under £31,000 (50% of the cost) and an annual maintenance charge of £3200.

Even if the Town Council members agree to the costs, there is still NO budget at Rochford District Council for CCTV. With Rochford District members determined to lavish money into Rochford it will come as some surprise to me if they agree to finance anything for Rayleigh at all!

If you'd like to go to the meeting, Town Council meetings are open to the public and are currently being held via Zoom
