  • without wishing to sound flippant, maybe it is a shortage of money! If I was a Russian oligarch I could go into any town or city and buy any number of houses. There would be no housing shortage for me then, i would be spoilt for choice. affordability is of course the key. The problem is essentially supply and demand of affordable homes. To address supply i believe you do not build lots of houses to sell at high market values – that will make the problem worse. Instead tackle the demand side by building lots of houses to rent at reasonable rents. Essentially Housing Association properties, Councils could possibly do the job – if they still had the teams they employed in the 1960’s. Housing Associations are the ‘path of least resistance’, give them the finance they need.
