Rochford District Council has recently unveiled plans to invest £1.5 million in council assets, with a substantial portion—up to £500,000—earmarked for the potential regeneration of the Freight House. This iconic building has long been a focal point in our community, and its future is a topic of great interest.
The decision, announced at the Full Council meeting on February 18th, reflects a commitment to breathing new life into this historic site. However, the investment hinges on the development of a robust business case, ensuring that every penny is spent wisely and with clear benefits for the community.
A Vision for Interim Use and Long-Term Regeneration
In the coming months, the council will review plans to reopen the Freight House for short-term uses. This approach allows the community to benefit from the space while a longer-term vision is crafted. To ensure a sustainable future, the council has engaged Ash Sakula to conduct a detailed feasibility study. This study will explore not only the regeneration of the building but also enhancements to the surrounding green spaces and reservoir areas.
The emphasis on revitalising the Freight House goes beyond mere restoration. It is about reimagining its role within our community—creating a vibrant hub that serves multiple purposes, from cultural events to local gatherings.
Community-Centric Development
A noteworthy aspect of this initiative is the council’s call for expressions of interest from event operators. By inviting local organisations to participate, the council is laying the groundwork for a collaborative approach. This move is not just about reopening a building; it’s about ensuring the Freight House remains relevant and valuable to the people it serves.
This approach aligns with the council’s broader vision of community-centric development. By actively seeking input and engagement from potential operators, we can create a dynamic space that adapts to the community’s evolving needs.
Transparent Decision-Making
On March 25th, the Strategy, Finance, and Policy Committee will review key aspects of the project, including reopening costs, timelines, and procurement needs. This transparent approach ensures accountability and keeps the community informed at every step.
I am committed to keeping residents updated on this process. The regeneration of the Freight House is not just about preserving a building; it’s about investing in the future of our community.
As your local councillor, I want to hear your thoughts and ideas. How would you like to see the Freight House used? Your feedback is crucial in shaping a space that truly belongs to the community.
Together, we can transform the Freight House into a place that reflects our shared values and aspirations. Let’s keep this conversation going—reach out to me or attend the upcoming committee meeting to make your voice heard.

Last night, I proposed a motion with Cllr Chris Stanley, which in part, asked the Council to support the #bangoutoforder campaign set up by the RSPCA.
